If you've never experienced Violetta Antnoia Sorcini's passionate artwork, you will have this exciting opportunity starting Saturday, April 21 at La Galeria Gitana in the San Fernando Valley. The show, which features local artists, closes Friday, June 1.
Sorcini is a veteran artist whose paintings, photography and collages often show at local galleries, including ChimMaya.
Born and raised in East L.A., the half-Latino artist is now preparing for what she anticipates will be a life-changing Art Odyssey to Central Italy to meet and live with the Italian side of her family for a month.
"The whole reason I'm going to Italy is to create an art book about my experiences with my relatives and the communities that I'll be visiting,"

The central theme of Sorcini's non-abstract paintings, photographs and collages is "story."

"My artwork is composed of allegories that make statements about how I see the world," said Sorcini. "I invite contemplation while staying positive."

Over 15 years ago, Violetta was stricken with a near fatal illness, recovering after a long rehabilitation. In recent years, she has jump started her professional art career with projects that examine her social and physical environments, while interpreting her experiences and social sensibilities. She exhibits locally ChimMaya Art Gallery and La Galleria Gitana, as well as internationally.
Ms. Sorcini has had a long and impressive career as an abstract artist, showing regularly with artist representation in Los Angeles and in New York. Her honors included a residency in Spain and being invited by His Majesty Juan Carlos II to a group show at the Palace Armory in Madrid, with notable American and European artists Jamie Wyeth and works by the renowned Spanish artist Xavier Corbero.
When I asked "V" what inspires her, she replied:
"I start my artworks with meditation on life, and then translate the resulting ideas into sketches, photography or digital format. I don't work from life, except for sketching because my artwork is produced in a subliminal fashion--making compositions decisions on the fly while balancing and keeping the initial statement intact. My work is not academic but stream of consciousness developed on canvas. Making the experience of creating a personal one that others may find relatable."

I work in series, not serials--dividing my interests into a series of images of places I love, people in my life, others that influence me. I express these ideas in landscapes, abstracts, figurative, photography and digital images. -- Violetta Antonia Sorcini

"This one got me a lot of blow back from people accusing me of trying to profit from a tragedy. But I educated them by explaining that this is part of an artist's job: to document historical events and comment on them."
